Did you know Apple has been developing iGlasses since 2006?
Many people may not know this but Apple started working on a similar product to Google Glass in 2006. However, due to the popularity of the iPod and iPhones, the project was left on the side-line and the Google Glass was released to the market earlier this year.
It was said by Tony Fadell, the ex-head of Apple’s iPod division, that Apple made ‘a bunch’ of prototypes well before Google released its smart glasses to the market this year but he thought it was ‘the craziest thing’ he had worked on. The idea was to create a visor with a built-in screen which created an entertainment experience to potentially make you feel like you’re sitting in a theatre. In an interview with Fast Company, the business magazine, Mr Fadell confirmed that Apple had actually been working on a headset which they now say was similar to the Google Glass from early 2006.
However the success of the iPhone, which was initially launched in 2007, and the demand for the new iPod resulted in the project being abandoned due to a new focus for the company. As the success of the current products increased, Apple stated they did not have enough time to do anything else as they were continually amending current products and adapting them to new markets.
Apple found such success in the areas they were already working in so didn’t have time to work on something new and different so the iGlasses are not likely to be ready for the next few years. It is likely that Apple are waiting to see how successful the Google Glass is rather than finishing and releasing a product which may not be very successful. If Apple feel this new product will offer something different and valuable then they may release it in a few years, whereas Apple does not usually enter the markets if companies are succeeding.
Apples version of smart glasses will primarily focus on creating the next generation of entertainment and will be marketed differently to Google Glass. Look out for iGlasses in the future.
