BBM has finally extended to Apple and Android!

Apple and Android users are now able to gain access to Blackberry’s popular messaging service for the first time. Results show that more than 51 million Blackberry users communicated daily through BBM, rather than simply texting. This was one of the earliest chat tools used to give a free and private communication tool over the internet.

When Blackberry rolled out the BBM app for Android and Apple users, they managed 10 million downloads in the first 24 hours. BBM is available as a free download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Market, however due to such high demand the app has been limiting access.

If you were lucky enough to sign up to BBM.com then you would have had a head start and would have been more likely to be able to use BBM immediately, whereas if you have to register then you will have to wait for the email to be able to activate the app. Regardless of the delay, BBM has proved very popular as Blackberry has confirmed the 10 million user mark has been met.

The software was expected to be announced for Android and Apple devices on 21st and 22nd September, but this was scrapped after a fake version of BBM appeared online hours after its initial launch. It just so happened that the unofficial app was downloaded by more than 1.1 million people during the first 8 hours of release. Due to this unofficial release, Blackberry was happy with the response despite the issues caused. This fake version confirmed that rolling BBM out to Apple and Android users was going to be a success.

BBM will continue to compete with other free messaging services already made available to smartphone users, such as WhatsApp and Viber.

Have you downloaded BBM yet?
